Burberry Legacy
2009
Founded in 1856, Burberry has a long history and has been instrumental in creating some of the iconic fashion statements of the 20th century. Examples include the trench coat and the famous tartan check pattern that is now widely copied.
Burberry is one of the most recognized fashion brands. The Burberry brand was founded in 1856 by Thomas, a draper’s aide, who opened his first store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. By the late 1800s, Thomas’ business was well established, and he had become known for some of his clothing inventions. Thomas had invented a new material he called Gabardine, which was breathable, tear proof, and waterproof. He later created the trench coat, which became very popular amongst the soldiers fighting in the Boer War in Africa. Burberry is presently one of the most recognized names in luxury clothes.
Burberry (also called Burberrys) has gained in stature over the years and has also sponsored the clothing of famous personages like Roald Emundsen who was the first man at the south pole. All their products have a strong “outdoor” feel to them and the same holds true of their fragrances.
