In 1914 Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to adapt its officer’s coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare, resulting in the “trench coat”. After the war, the trench coat became popular with civilians. The iconic Burberry check was created in the 1920s and used as a lining in its trench coats. Burberry also specially designed aviation garments. A. E. Clouston and Mrs. Betsy Kirby Green made the fastest flying time to Cape Town from London in 1937 and were sponsored by Burberry.

Burberry was founded in 1856 when 21-year-old Thomas Burberry, a former draper’s apprentice, opened his own store in Basingatoke, Hampshire, England. By 1870, the business had established itself by focusing on the development of outdoors attire. In 1880, Burberry invented gabardine, a hardwearing, water-resistant yet breathable fabric, in which the yarn is waterproofed before weaving. The Gabardine was patented in 1888. Burberry was the original name, but then the company soon switched to using the name Burberrys, after many customers from around the world began calling it Burberrys of London. This name is still visible on many older Burberry products.

Lily Allen for Chanel 2009 Fall

Aug 14
2009

After what seems like years of waiting, the picture of Lily Allen for Chanel bags Fall 2009 campaign have finally surfaced. The new Chanel handbag line is called “Coco Cocoon” which launches in October. It’s a collection of reversible, lightweight nylon and lambskin bags in black, ecru, navy, or beige. Turn them inside out, and you’ve got the same tote, overnight duffel, or hanging garment bag in quilted garnet—the original lining colour of the house’s classic 2.55 bag. As much as I didn’t particular like the idea of Lily Allen being the face of Chanel, she does make these hideous bags look really cute in the ad campaign. I like the slight reference to “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”, plus I sense a bit of Victoria Beckham too. Lily is still very much Lily in these ads. They haven’t tried to make her someone she’s not which I was initially worried about.

Jerry Hall

Jerry Hall is having a moment. After an unfortunate foray into reality TV, the leggy model, now 52, is back in fashion. Karl Lagerfeld shot her for Chanel’s Spring accessories catalog, and Chloé’s Hannah MacGibbon cited illustrator Antonio Lopez’s Girls—chief among whom was Hall in her 1970’s heyday—as the inspiration for her Fall collection. The blond-haired, blue-eyed, six-foot Texan landed in Paris as a teenager with a suitcase full of Frederick’s of Hollywood knockoffs sewn for her by her mother. “She was tall, she was thin, she was beautiful, and with that long hair she was just a natural,” says designer Stephen Burrows.

By 21, Hall had appeared on 40 magazine covers, Italian Vogue and Cosmopolitan included. And her romances with rock stars Bryan Ferry and Mick Jagger—she had four children with the Rolling Stones frontman—are the stuff of legend. She appeared on the album cover of Roxy Music’s Siren and her 1985 memoir Tall Tales incited Ferry’s hit “Kiss and Tell.” Her burgeoning jet-set romance with Jagger in the late seventies provided some of the better material in The Andy Warhol Diaries, and her steamy marriage to the rocker may yet wind up the subject of a movie—Hall recently sold the film rights to her new autobiography Self Portrait, which is set to be released by Harper Collins later this year. We’ll be watching.

Chanel Handbag

Aug 13
2009

The handbags . . . sigh. Kind of a mixed, uh, bag (no pun intended). The hilights are easy to spot - a tulle-covered flap bag quilted with rows of sequins and another classic flap, this one set on its end and made into a north/south tote that plays with an onlooker’s senses of proportion and perception. They’re beautiful in vastly different ways, but both are a play on the classic Chanel aesthetic and make the observer think about form and function. The lowlights . . . similarly easy to spot. Handbags fashioned to look like shopping bags were boring a long time ago (Bloomingdale’s vinyl “brown bag” totes, anyone?), and I certainly don’t need to pay as much for one as these probably cost. Also, the whole idea seems kind of 2003 - logo bags have been steadily declining in popularity in favor of more subtle luxuries. “CHANEL” in big, bold letters is the antithesis of subtle.

Jerry Hall for Chanel

jerry-hall-for-chanel

Yes, this is Jerry Hall. And she’s looking absolutely amazing at 52 years old, playing opposite the much-younger Baptiste Giabiconi in Lagerfeld’s interpretation of the 1920 French novel Cheri, written by Colette. In the novel, a years-long May-December romance is interrupted by the marriage of the younger man, after which he returns to his older lover for one night to receive her blessing and support to leave forever. Lagerfeld’s photographs appear to take place during that one the night, and they’re nothing short of gorgeous. Well, except for one; one photo is in full color and seems to convey a much different mood than the others. Maybe you wonder if it was accidentally included in the electronic package that we received or if it actually appears in the non-electronic catalog. If it does, you maybe think it would have been better left out, but who will be to question Karl Lagerfeld? No one, that’s who, and most people will be sure he’d tell you that if you asked him. Actually, he’d probably just tell you that you’re demode.

Chanel has always symbolized elegance; the brand’s identity has always been crystal-clear. Karl Lagerfeld is the creative force behind Chanel, although I’m sure you all were aware of that. As a result, all of the creative elements of Chanel’s branding are immensely, luxuriously over the top in ways that few other brands can touch (although Louis Vuitton also does an admirable job with Marc Jacobs at the helm), with advertising campaigns and catalogues often photographed by Lagerfeld himself. He is indeed the man behind the camera for Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2009 Accessories Catalogue.

The heat wave is making its way across the US and everyone continuing to bring out their summer whites. A white hot Chanel summer is the most fashionable way to intergrate white. From a white J12 watch, to Limited Editon white nail polish, to the ighly loved and respected Chanel 2.55 in white patent, Chanel is bring you every white hot item your heart desires.

Christian Louboutin Schoolita Framed Bag

Aug 12
2009

Shoe designers cross over and become bag designers with varying amounts of success. The recent example that most of us know best is jimmy choo : the long-time shoe brand added a bag line a few years ago and hasn’t looked back. They have a dedicated following and have used bags as a way to introduce a new group of women to the brand that may not have previously thought they needed $800 stilettos in their lives.

Some shoes brand don’t perform quite as well as Choo does in the bag arena, however. I saw this Christian Louboutin Schoolita Framed Bag from the internet today and actually kind of liked it, so I thought I’d share it with you. It is elegant enough for the evening, yet casual enough for daytime wear. The graceful shaping with the metal plates (balanced by metal feet you can’t see in this image) is echoed in the pleating and stitching, giving the purse a very deliberate, contained feeling. The bag is 15″W X 12″H X 5½”, with 7″ drop double handles, and made from soft, Italian calf. There’s a surprise inside — the lining is blood red cotton! The inside also has a cell phone and zipper pocket. This bag would be great with stilettos under jeans or with a fitted dress. The Christian Louboutin Schoolita Framed Bag is available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,495.
